More information

The Votive Church of Our Lady of Hungary (Szegedi dóm) is a twin-spired cathedral in Szeged, it lies on Dóm Ter meaning cathedral square. Construction began in 1913, but due to the outbreak of the First World War, it was not completed until 1930.

It is the fourth largest church in Hungary. The dome is 54m outside (33m above the inside floor) and the towers are both 91m high. The "Heroes' bell" in the tower on the Tisza side weighs 8600kg.

The inside of the cathedral is elaborately painted and with natural lighting from the stain glass windows makes it particularly picturesque. At certain times of the year the towers are open to the public which is well worth the hike to get amazing views over the city and the Tisza river.

The cathedral square is surrounded by cloister style roof under which there are many busts of notable poets, writers and heroes of Hungary. In the summer a stage is erected here with elevated seating for a series of open air concerts and plays which are famous through out Hungary.
